Visa and Mastercard Endorse UCP — Payment Infrastructure Goes Agentic

January 15, 2026

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Adyen have all endorsed the Universal Commerce Protocol, signaling that the payment infrastructure layer is ready for agentic commerce at scale.

This endorsement means AI agents can now initiate and complete payment flows through structured protocols. Combined with UCP's native support for the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and OAuth 2.0 identity linking, the full commerce stack — from discovery to payment settlement — is now agent-accessible.

For merchants, this removes the last infrastructure barrier. The question is no longer whether agentic commerce will happen, but whether merchants can see and optimize their agentic traffic when it does.
